Men's Lacrosse Controls Senators from Start to Finish to Earn Third Straight Victory
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team eased past Davis & Elkins 24-3 at home on Wednesday night, pushing their winning streak to three in the process.
Within the first minute and a half of the first quarter, senior Alex Walstrum won a pair of face-offs and classmate Wesley Phillips dished out assists to junior Graham Allison and sophomore Luke Roach for an early 2-0 advantage. The Senators had their first look at offense after a blocked shot and a clear, but it wouldn't last long as senior Seamus Kearney caused a turnover and picked up the groundball to get FSU back on offense. Phillips turned from provider to scorer, as Roach earned the assist for the Bobcats' third of the day. After Frostburg fired away another three shots, D&E tried to get back in their offensive side of the field but sophomore Jack Hooks prevented them from doing so with a CT, leading to Phillips netting another goal off a feed from sophomore Henry Sykes.
Each team traded turnovers over the next three minutes, with FSU also hitting the post, leading to Davis & Elkins getting on the board in the breakaway for a 4-1 score. Motivated by losing the shutout, the Bobcats roared back with four goals in less than three minutes, with Phillips and junior John Serina scoring and assisting one another on a pair of goals, while Roach netted another before passing to senior Tyrin Long for an 8-1 game. The Serina-Phillips connection paid off again before Kearney and senior Landon Bruce caused a pair of turnovers, as freshman Kobe Link scored with 30 seconds left in the frame off a feed from junior Shaun Gillispie for a 10-1 lead after one quarter.
The Senators opened up the second frame with an illegal body check to go a man down, which junior Sean Mullineaux took advantage of, picking up a rebounded shot for an easy finish. Sophomore Luke Aspnes joined in on the fun with a pair of goals 20 seconds apart on assists by Phillips and Sykes before earning himself an assist to senior Drew Mullineaux all within the first five minutes. After another section of back-and-forth turnovers, senior Nate Jones made Frostburg's first save of the game with just over five minutes left in the period, leading to Hooks finding Aspnes for the latter's hat trick. Sophomore JT Calhoun polished off the half with a solo effort for a 16-1 lead at the break.
D&E won the first face-off of the third, however the elder Mullineaux caused a quick turnover, with junior Matt Williams picking up the loose ball and leading an offensive charge which culminated in him trading passes with Hooks, who earned an assist on the former's goal. The Senators were gifted a chance just under four minutes later after a Bobcat penalty allowed them to score a man-up goal, but Phillips was quick to respond on a goal from sophomore Wyatt Dooley's pass. Link and Gillispie connected once more just over a minute later, while senior Emanuel Jackson, Jr. added his name to the score sheet by bullying his way through the defense to make it a 20-2 contest. Serina caused another turnover and Jones once more stood tall in net, as FSU's defense locked the Senators down the rest of the frame.
It took Frostburg three minutes and five shots before Roach got the scoring started in the fourth on an Allison assist, then Calhoun was found at the top of the zone by Dooley for a rocketed shot and a 20-goal advantage. Freshman Payton Dean picked up a CT as Davis & Elkins tried to go on the clear, as Link was found by the younger Mullineaux 20 seconds later. Each team struggled to take care of the ball for the next five minutes until Jackson, Jr. made a smart pass to a wide-open Dooley at the back post for an easy finish. The Senators ended the game by netting their third goal for the final 24-3 score.
Phillips had an outstanding day offensively, scoring a career-high five goals while dishing out four assists for the third consecutive game, completing a career-best nine-point game. Aspnes, Roach, and Link each added a trio of goals, while Serina and Dooley each went for a goal and pair of assists. In the face-off circle, Walstrum and senior Gregg Dort, Jr. combined to win 23-of-27 in the X while picking up 15 total groundballs.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 6-5 on the year, while D&E drops to 1-11. FSU remains at home as they get back into ECC play against No. 18 Molloy on Saturday, April 5 at 11 a.m., where the game will be played in support of the Love Strong 51 Foundation.
