Handwerger, Rippeon, Ramsey Help Lead Women's Swimming to Tri-Meet Sweep
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Swimming team swept their season-opening tri-meet with Wheeling and West Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 159-92 and 207-14, respectively
After the Cardinals won the meet's opening event in the 200m medley relay, sophomore Genna Rippeon got FSU going by winning the 800m free in 9:32.28. She later would also take first in the 400m free at 4:38.84, nearly 17 seconds ahead of her closest competition.
Freshman Jenna Handwerger announced herself in strong fashion for her first collegiate meet, taking three individual wins on the day in the 200m free (2:13.45), 200m fly (2:30.36), and the 200m IM (2:31.98). Junior Alexis Ramsey also picked up a pair of victories, taking the 100m free (1:05.45) and led the charge in a 1-2-3 Frostburg finish during the 100m fly (1:09.66), followed by classmates Morgan Greenlee (1:12.83) and Mackenzie Payne (1:13.97).
Junior Jayme Meadows would have a pair of top-two finishes, winning the 50m free in 29.02 and going runner-up in the 100m back (1:11.06), where sophomore Kay Buhrman finished third (1:12.25). Buhrman later won the 200m back in 2:32.89. Sophomore Taylor Emrich earned a couple second-place finishes in the 200 IM (2:39.08) and the 200m breast (3:01.49), while Greenlee tacked on second in the 200m fly (2:37.28).
Frostburg ended the meet on a high note, as the team of Handwerger, Ramsey, Meadows, and Rippeon won the 200m free relay at 1:54.22.
With the sweep, FSU begins the year at 2-0 and will next travel to Davis & Elkins on Saturday, October 18 at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
