Hiles, Hunter-Snyder, Bernier Lead Women's Wrestling at ESU Open

The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team opened their season at the ESU Open on Sunday, earning 10th overall as a team, while three athletes earned placing spots.

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team opened their season at the ESU Open on Sunday, earning 10th overall as a team, while three athletes earned placing spots.
 
The top finish on the day came from junior Maria Hiles, who earned third place in the 180 lbs bracket. She took a pair of pinfall victories in the opening round and in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she fell to the top seed 9-2 before recovering to defeat the bracket's two seed 4-0 in the third-place match.
 
Also in the bracket, freshman Chaniah Bernier took fifth, having won her opening match by pinfall before losing to the same opponent as Hiles in the quarterfinals. She responded by pinning the fifth-seeded wrestler in the field followed by a 3-0 decision to book a spot in the fifth-place match, where she again won by pinfall.
 
FSU's final placer of the day came through sophomore Amber Hunter-Snyder, who took fourth at 145 lbs. She won her first bout by a 10-0 tech fall before recording back-to-back pins to reach the quarterfinals. In a close match, she came out on top 4-3 to book a semifinal spot before coming up just shy in getting to the finals and in the third-place bout.
 
The Bobcats next will head to Adrian to compete in the Bulldogs' Duals and Tournament starting Saturday, November 8 at 10 am. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
