Diallo, Butler Conclude Season at NCAA Championships
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Frostburg State Men's Wrestling team had two athletes compete in the NCAA National Tournament on Friday, with senior Thierno Diallo and graduate Owen Butler representing the program in the championships.
Both wrestlers were matched with tough competition to begin, as Diallo (133 lbs) was matched up against Hector Serratos of Nebraska Kearney, who defeated him by tech fall. Butler (174 lbs) faced off against Sevi Garza from Ashland, as Butler would go down by major decision in his first appearance.
Both wrestlers would respond in their first consolation round, with Diallo staring with a decision over Logan Robinson from UNC Pembroke, winning by a score of 14-8. Butler continued the success for Frostburg, following up with another win, coming out on top in his rematch with Maxwell Kiel from Belmont Abbey from during the regular season, pinning him in 4:13.
Needing another win on the opening day to advance to Saturday, both Diallo and Butler would come up short, both to wrestlers from St. Cloud State. Diallo lost to Same Spencer on a tech fall, while Butler lost a close match to Bryce Dagel that ended in a 5-3 decision.
Frostburg concludes their second-ever season at the Division II level, finishing with an overall record of 10-4, placing fifth as a team at regionals. This is the second consecutive year Head Coach Josh Hutchens has taken two Bobcats to Nationals, with Diallo going back-to-back years, while also being crowned an MEC Champion this year as well. Diallo went into the day with a 7-1 record on the year, while Butler was a big part of the success FSU had this season, seeing a solid 20-4 record before the tournament.
