HAMPTON, Va. – The Frostburg State Men's Wrestling team finished in second place out of 15 teams at the Virginia Duals over Friday and Saturday, racking up three wins to make it to the championship match.
Frostburg started their weekend with a 34-11 win over Liberty on Friday, as redshirt freshman Garhett Dickenson picked up the first of the day for the Bobcats in the 133 lb weight class with a 4-3 decision. Sophomore Gage Heilbrun pinned his opponent in 1:58 in the 149 lb weight class, while redshirt junior John D'amico saw a 17-2 tech fall in 157 and redshirt sophomore Noah Reho took the 16-2 major decision in 165. To start their day on Saturday, Frostburg held on for the tough 24-20 victory over Ferrum to send them to the championships match. Redshirt junior Dylan Montgomery saw the first win of the day for the Bobcats with a 9-1 major decision in 141. FSU then took four straight matches to set them ahead the rest of the way, starting with D'amico putting up a 11-2 major decision in the 157 lb weight class, followed by Buckler taking a 11-4 decision in the 165 weight class. Reho then stood tall in 174 with a 10-1 major decision, before Butler won his third match of the weekend with a 21-1 tech fall in 184.
Looking for a rematch against the No. 18 Golden Bears from the two team's meeting earlier this season, Frostburg fell shy in the championship match of the tournament against Kutztown. Bell added another win to his belt over the weekend with a pinfall in 141, while Butler finished the weekend undefeated, going for a major decision of 15-2 in 174. Bage picked up the final points of the match for FSU with a forfeit in 285, bringing the final score to 34-16.
After the weekend, Frostburg's overall record moves to 7-2. The Bobcats come back home for their next meet, hosting the Bobcat Duals on Sunday, January 19 as they welcome in Shippensburg, Pitt-Johnstown, and Belmont Abbey. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
