Men's Soccer Drops Home Contest to Point Park

The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped their match to Point Park on Saturday evening by a final score of 3-1.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team dropped their match to Point Park on Saturday evening by a final score of 3-1.

Point Park kicked off the game, earning themselves a free kick in the first minute.  The Pioneers were then awarded a corner kick, keeping the ball in their possession for the first few minutes.  The ball ended up at the feet of Frostburg, as the team was able to pass up field, setting up junior Carlos Quintero Rivas for a try at a goal, as he struck it low left center but was denied by the keeper.  Point Park then geared up for possession, taking their chance down field, striking at goal just 20 seconds later, but was stopped by freshman Jan Foret.  Quintero Rivas then tried another shot at goal but again was denied by the goalie.  A few minutes later, FSU earned a corner kick, with senior Mateo Cuadros sending it in, where a header from senior Caleb Dell was sent just high.

Frostburg continued to dominate possession, seeing every chance at goal they could get, but were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.  Freshman Andrew Denard attempted a chance at goal, causing the goalie to make another save, as a shot from Cuadros was shot way high.  Dell saw another chance at goal, sending his look out wide, prior to freshman Dominic Good sending his shot out wide as well.  Point Park got one more look at offense before the half ended, as Denard sent one more high over the goal, ending the half at a 0-0 draw.

The Pioneers were able to put everything together to score their first goal of the night, playing the ball up the left side of the field and slotting it home for a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the second.  Sophomore Hugo Portillo saw the first two shots of the half for the Bobcats, sending both off target.  Both teams started to play a little chippy, with Point Park looking to increase their lead, and FSU trying to tie the game at one.  The Pioneers were called for offsides, before Frostburg put together two shots from Cuadros and senior Alex Retzos, both that missed.  With around 15 minutes left in regulation, senior Laki Psallidas took a chance outside the box, firing away a shot that just missed and bounced off the woodwork.  Point Park then rebounded, capitalizing on an out of position FSU defense, sneaking another goal past Foret for a 2-0 game.

The Bobcats worked quickly, marching down field right away, with Quintero Rivas taking a shot that was blocked by Point Park's defense, that then ended up at the feet of Psallidas, where he was able to slice it home to cut FSU's deficit in half to 2-1.  Frostburg continued to apply pressure, doing everything they could to win the ball and win a chance at goal.  Senior Zach Harpel launched a shot at goal, aiming for bottom center, but was denied by the keeper.  Both teams continued to play rough as time ticked down, with substitutions having to come in for both teams, including senior Brennan Moore coming to play in goal.  With just over a minute left, on a ball that was fumbled around, the Pioneers were able to capitialize, slotting one more goal home to seal the 3-1 win.

Frostburg dominated in shots with 19, compared to Point Park's six.  FSU also led in corner kicks with five to the Pioneer's one, while Foret finished with two saves in goal.

With the loss, Frostburg goes to 2-1 on the season, while Point Park jumps to 2-2.  The Bobcats remain at home, welcoming in Salem on Wednesday, September 18 for a 5 PM game.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
