Men's Basketball Drops Final Game of Bobcat Classic to Close Out Opening Weekend

The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell in their final game of the Bobcat Classic with an 85-46 loss to Seton Hill (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Basketball team fell in their final game of the Bobcat Classic with an 85-46 loss to Seton Hill (Pa.) on Sunday afternoon.

Frostburg quickly got on the board to open the game, with graduate Eric Sondberg knocking down a three just 10 seconds into the start.  Junior Manok Lual swatted away the first shot from Seton Hill, as Sondberg was then able to connect on another trey to put the Bobcats up 6-0.  The Griffins captured their first points of the day over two minutes in, as both teams saw a slow opening five minutes into the game.  SHU started to roll, going on a 12-0 run to bring the game to 12-6, before freshman Jaden Baker laid in a bucket to end FSU's scoring drought.  Another jumper from Baker, followed by another long-range shot from Sondberg brought the game within three.  Baker continued to provide for the Bobcats on offense, seeing two more jumpers to put the game at 19-17 around the midway mark of the half.

The Griffins strung together an eight point run to advance their lead, as Baker continued to help Frostburg stay on the board.  SHU was able to push their advantage to double digits off a layup in the paint, as the Bobcats struggled to make shots and break the tough zone defense of Seton Hill.  The Griffins picked up two steals off FSU to push their lead to 12, before senior Koby Baptiste collected himself at the free throw line to add a point to Frostburg's score.  Again, SHU racked up eight straight points looking to double their lead, but another free throw from the Bobcats, this time from freshman D'Yan Carter, put the score at 39-21 with 3:30 left in the first.  Baptiste was able to pick off a pass on the defensive end for FSU, but the half ended with it being all Seton Hill, as the Griffins pushed their lead out to 49-21 at the break.

Baker drove into the paint for a bucket to score the first points of the second half, as SHU responded right back with a layup of their own.  Lual put one in on the next possession for Frostburg, right before the Griffins showed their spark from the first half for another 8-0 run.  FSU struggled to keep the ball on offense, as high energy from Seton Hill was tough to keep up with.  Sondberg kept his hands active on defense to be credited with a steal, but nothing was drawn up at the other end for offense.  The Griffins took six more points before freshman Kadon Fossett found Lual for another bucket and a 68-30 score around the halfway point of the second.

Fossett got in on the scoring action, knocking one down from behind the arch, but again Seton Hill had a response to get those points right back.  Fossett stayed hot from deep, connecting on two more treys to get the score to 80-41.  Nothing was stopping SHU on their offensive attempts, as freshman Christopher Meakin was able to score his first collegiate points on a layup in the paint.  Both teams swapped misses over the span of two minutes, as Meakin dunked in the final points of the day for FSU to bring the final score to 85-46.

Baker led Frostburg in scoring with 13, while Lual, Sondberg, and Fossett each contributed nine.  Lual led the team in rebounds with six, while Baptiste picked up five and Meakin found himself with four.  Baker, Fossett, and senior JayShaun Freeman all finished with three assists.

With the loss, Frostburg moves to 1-1 to start the season, while Seton Hill opens their season 2-0.  The Bobcats go on the road for the first time this season for their next contest against Shepherd on Wednesday, November 13 at 7 PM.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
