Fighting Falcons Use Strong Pitching to Defeat Softball in Wednesday Sweep

The Frostburg State softball team lost on the road to Fairmont State Wednesday by final scores of 6-0 and 6-1.

FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Frostburg State softball team lost on the road to Fairmont State Wednesday by final scores of 6-0 and 6-1.

In game one Frostburg would threaten in the first with freshman Bri Russo drawing a walk and junior Olivia Stetler putting a single up the middle, but both runners were stranded on base. The Falcons quickly got on the board with a pair of infield singles and a walk for a 1-0 lead after one. A one-out double, back-to-back walks, and another infield hit put the lead up to two after the second. Neither team managed to do much at the plate in the third and fourth, with the Bobcats threatening in the fifth.

Senior Cristina Sommerkamp and Russo walked either side of a single by freshman Julia Meagher, but the former was thrown out at home on a grounder and a strikeout ended the frame. Fairmont extended their lead in the bottom half, again using small ball with three singles and a pair of walks, as well as a sac fly to plate four runs and move up 6-0. Senior Hanna Binek lined a double into left-center to try and spark some offense in the sixth, but was left on following a pair of grounders. The Falcons also left two runners on in their at-bats, while the Bobcats went down in order to close out the seventh, dropping the 6-0 decision.

In game two the Bobcats would start out going down in order, while Fairmont again scored an early run off a pair of walks and an error. Senior Samara Funk had an infield single to start the second but reached no further, while on the mound freshman Izabella Donaldson would find more of a groove in the second and third, only giving up one hit between the two frames. Frostburg would find life in the fourth after junior Arden Miller led off with a line drive triple to center, scoring on a sac fly from Binek to deep left making the game 1-1.

Donaldson was able to work around a lead-off single in the bottom half, though the Bobcats went down 1-2-3 in the next half inning. The Falcons would respond by breaking the tie in the fifth, as the first three batters all reached on singles, while an error put a run across. Another three scored off a homer to straightaway center, with the score now standing at 6-1. Stetler managed another knock through the middle in leading off the seventh, but that would be the Bobcats' final baserunner of the day, with the Falcons picking up the five-run victory.

With the losses, Frostburg is now 10-26 on the season and Fairmont goes to 26-11-1. Frostburg will be home their next 10 games with the first coming on Saturday, April 12 at 1 p.m. against Concord. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
