Bernier Wins 180 B Bracket for Women's Wrestling at Adrian Open
ADRIAN, Mich. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team concluded their weekend in Michigan with an 8th-place finish in the Adrian Open on Sunday.
Freshman Chaniah Bernier produced a championship performance for FSU, winning the 180-lb B bracket. She earned three consecutive tech falls in reaching the first-place bout before battling her way to a 4-4 score in which she received the decision victory.
At the 124 B bracket, freshman Ella McDonald also impressed early on, winning by scores of 8-0, 14-6, and 13-2 before getting a pinfall after 90 seconds to book her spot in the championship. She would have to settle for second place, however, losing by an 11-0 tech fall. In similar fashion, freshman Belle Konopka went for back-to-back tech falls at 138 C before a narrow 4-2 decision to get to the finals, where she ultimately fell 13-2 for another second place.
In 117 B, freshman Morgan Layman took her first two matches by tech fall and pinfall before dropping her quarterfinal matchup. Being placed into the consolation bracket, she rolled to another pair of tech falls and a pin to reach the third-place bout, which she won narrowly 4-2.
FSU then had a pair of solid finishes in the 160 B and 160 C brackets. In the former, freshman Naria Medrano took her first three matches by a 7-4 decision, pinfall, and tech fall before narrowly losing out 13-8 in the semifinals. At the C bracket, freshman Reise Roach went for a tech fall and pin before also falling in the semis. She then had another pinfall to reach the third-place match, where her opponent also suffered the same fate.
