IUP Scores in Each Quarter to Defeat Field Hockey
INDIANA, Pa. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell 4-0 on the road to Indiana (Pa.) on Wednesday evening.
Early on, IUP took control of the attacking chances, forcing senior goalkeeper Zoe Barnes into four saves within the first seven minutes. The Bobcats had trouble making their way up the field, as much of the period was played in their own defensive half. With five minutes left before the quarter break, the Crimson Hawks ramped their pressure up again, as Barnes made another four stops before the ball made its way just to the right of goal, where Jess Davidson passed to Hayven Mumma for a 1-0 advantage.
The second period featured much of the same possession, however FSU's defense limited IUP's chances to greater effect. Barnes turned away a shot nine and a half minutes in as Frostburg attempted to hold on to the one goal deficit to the half. Two minutes later, however, a long pass over top the defense took a pair of deflections on its path to Mumma, whose first effort was denied by Barnes before she put home the rebound to go into halftime up 2-0.
There wouldn't be much change to the pattern of play in the third, as the Hawks earned three penalty corners in the first six minutes, having one effort stopped by Barnes and another go just wide of goal. Midway through the period, another shot went wide before Mumma netted her hat trick, sweeping home a pass from outside the arc into the left side of the cage for a 3-0 score.
Three minutes into the fourth, IUP had a corner from which the Bobcat defense was able to block an attempted shot. Five minutes later, the Hawks took advantage of another one, with Lauren Horning ripping a shot from the top of the arc to the back of the cage for the hosts' fourth of the game.
The Crimson Hawks 18 total shots without allowing one from FSU, as Barnes made 11 saves in net.
With the loss, Frostburg drops to 3-12, while IUP improves to 6-6. The Bobcats will return home on Saturday, October 25 to host Kutztown for Senior Day at 1 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
