Strong 4th Quarter Helps Women's Lacrosse to Road Win Over Golden Eagles

The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team defeated Charleston on the road 15-4, winning their third consecutive game.

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State women's lacrosse team defeated Charleston on the road 15-4, winning their third consecutive game. 
 
The Bobcats hit the road with a 2-0 record in Mountain East Conference play to face off with the Golden Eagles, who also entered undefeated in conference play. 
 
Junior Niclole Gray got the start for FSU in goal, as for the first five minutes of the game both teams played evenly exchanging turnovers. UC got on the board first to go up 1-0, but junior Julia Badolato caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and scored to tie the game at 1-1. FSU took the lead on a goal from senior Camden DeMaio and then added to the lead when senior Maura O'Neill scored to make it a 3-1 FSU lead. UC added a goal before the end of the first to make it 3-2 Bobcats after one. 
 
The second quarter was all Frostburg, adding three goals to their lead. Again, the first five minutes of the quarter went without a goal until senior Lilly Stephens scored at the 9:33 mark. After a foul on the Golden Eagles, Stephens scored her second on a free position. With just under two minutes to play in the half, DeMaio scored her second goal as well, sending the Bobcats into the half up 6-2. 
 
UC scored first in the second half make the score 6-3, but in response O'Neill wasted no time finding sophomore Neila Haney for a man-up goal, putting FSU up 7-3. After causing a turnover, the Golden Eagles pulled to within three goals with ten minutes to play in the quarter. As time was running down, Stephens found DeMaio with just nine seconds left in the quarter to go up 8-4 after three. 
 
Frostburg made a statement in the fourth quarter, closing out the game with their best frame of the day. Junior Kerri Hayes started of the scoring with her first goal early on, then DeMaio put FSU into double digits on a free position goal. Haney and Stephens scored quick back-to-back goals to make the score 12-4 FSU. Just over three minutes later, the pair did it again, pushing the FSU goal count to 14. Junior Brittyn Leonard finished off the quarter for the Bobcats, scoring the final goal of the game and making the official score 15-4. FSU's defense held Charleston scoreless in the entire last 15 minutes. 
 
DeMaio led the Bobcats with seven points and five goals, while Stephens tacked on four goals and an assist. Haney five of the 11 FSU draw controls, while junior Megan Keller caused a team-high three turnovers to go with four groundballs. Gray picked up the win making five saves on the day.

With the win, Frostburg moves to 7-5 on the year, while Charleston falls to 6-6. The Bobcats return home on Wednesday, April 10 to face Davis & Elkins at 5 p.m. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
