Haney, DeMaio, Leonard Lead Women's Lacrosse to Fourth Straight Victory Over D&E

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team rolled to their fourth straight victory on Wednesday evening with a 24-5 home decision over Davis & Elkins.

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team rolled to their fourth straight victory on Wednesday evening with a 24-5 home decision over Davis & Elkins.

Sophomore Neila Haney secured the game's opening draw control, then moved the ball downfield, eventually scoring on a feed from senior Anna Kearney for the first goal of the contest. Over the next four minutes, both teams had several turnovers, with sophomore Isabelle Kelly and junior Megan Keller responsible for a pair on the Senators, the latter leading to another Haney goal on an assist from senior Camden DeMaio. After D&E won the resulting draw, junior Delaney Devers earned a couple CT's, leading to solo goals from Kearney and Haney for a 4-0 lead.

DeMaio kept the run going on a lengthy Bobcat possession, then junior Brittyn Leonard dished out a trio of dimes to sophomore Emily Lamoreaux and junior Julia Badolato, the latter scoring twice a minute apart for an 8-0 lead. Davis & Elkins finally got on the board with just over three minutes left in the period, but junior goalkeeper Nicole Gray stopped the next shot to bring the score to 8-1 after one.

A flurry of goals began the second quarter, with five total in the first five minutes. Graduate Lilly Stephens kicked things off with a solo run a minute in, followed by the Senators' second goal of the contest just 10 seconds apart. Lamoreux responded with a score on a pass from freshman Gianna Leonardi, then Haney caused a turnover in D&E's half before being fed by freshman Abigail Warner, as Leonard capped off the opening five with a free position goal for a 12-2 lead.

Davis & Elkins pulled a goal back with just over seven to play, but junior Kerri Hayes and Leonard swiftly scored goals two minutes apart to keep an 11-goal advantage. After a pair of yellow cards shown to the visitors, junior Savannah Reitz got a man-up goal with DeMaio dishing out another assist, as Gray made her second save of the day to end the half with Frostburg up 15-3.

The third frame began slowly, with each team coughing up a turnover, until three minutes in when Kearney passed to junior Natalie Crawford for her second goal of the season. Davis & Elkins was shown another yellow card, leading graduate Maura' O'Neill to add her name onto the score sheet, with Reitz then benefitting from another DeMaio pass for an 18-3 score. Getting the start in the second half, senior Whitney Crosby made her first save with two and a half minutes to go, as Reitz earned herself a hat trick with Warner assisting, ending the period up 19-3.

Freshman Caylee Markle opened the fourth with a free position goal a minute and a half in before Stephens fed sophomore Sydney Stone for a 21-3 contest. The Senators broke FSU's nine-goal scoring run with just over 10 minutes on the clock, though Crosby shut down the next attempt at goal, which led to Hayes scoring once more. Each side traded a goal in the next minute, with D&E getting one in just under the five-minute mark and sophomore Daniella Boss scoring on a DeMaio pass. Haney finished out the scoring in the final minute, with graduate Jordan Kenney getting her first point of the season on the pass for the 24-5 victory.

Haney led all scorers on the day with five goals, as DeMaio (1G, 4A) and Leonard (2G, 3A) each matched her point total. O'Neill was the driving force defensively, causing three turnovers to go with three groundballs, while tying Reitz at four draw controls apiece.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 8-5 on the year, while Davis & Elkins falls to 10-3. The Bobcats return to action on Thursday, April 18 for a road match against West Virginia Wesleyan at 3:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
