Women's Lacrosse Earns First Shutout of Season Against WVWC

The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team dominated on the road Thursday afternoon, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan with a 29-0 final for the team's first shutout of the season.

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team dominated on the road Thursday afternoon, taking down West Virginia Wesleyan with a 29-0 final for the team's first shutout of the season.

Frostburg got the ball rolling quickly on offense, firing away two shots at goal in the first 40 seconds, as junior Julia Badolato netted the first goal of the game a minute and 45 seconds in. WVWC picked up the next draw control, with sophomore Jessie Bare causing a turnover on the defensive end, leading sophomore Syndey Stone to find senior Anna Kearney on the offensive end to build Frostburg's lead to 2-0. Sophomore Neila Haney earned the next draw control, dishing the ball to Badolato to put another goal on the board. Both teams swapped turnovers, with junior Savanna Reitz being credited with a pair of caused turnovers, as she set FSU's offense up once again, with Badolato knotting another goal off a wide miss from sophomore Emily Lamoreaux. Kearney saw some action on the defensive end, causing a Wesleyan turnover, as senior Camden DeMaio scored her first goal of the day at the 7:35 mark to increase Frostburg's lead to 5-0. After the ball was traded and FSU was denied at goal, graduate Lilly Stephens found Haney for her first goal of the day and a 6-0 game. Frostburg kept their foot on the gas, as junior Brittyn Leonard caused a turnover, scooped up a ground ball, and scored a goal. WVWC saw their first shot of the game with 4:34 left in the first, with junior Nicole Gray picking up the save. FSU tried two more attempts at goal before scoring again, as Bare fed Leonard on the offensive end for another score. 13 seconds later, Leonard then dished to graduate Maura O'Neill to advance Frostburg's lead to 9-0. To end the quarter, Badolato sliced another one into the back of the net off an assist from O'Neill, putting FSU up 10-0 after one.

Wesleyan earned the first draw control of the second, with junior Megan Keller causing WVWC to cough up a turnover. After back-and-forth ball, DeMaio fed Haney for the first goal of the quarter, just over a minute and a half in. FSU attempted a trio of shots before finding the back of the net once again, this time with DeMaio putting the ball away off a free position attempt. Frostburg tacked on another goal right away with DeMaio scoring another off an assist from Keller. To build FSU's lead to 14-0, DeMaio found sophomore Daniella Boss for her first goal of the day, as the latter then added another one a minute later, off a feed from freshman Gianna Leonardi. On their third try at goal over the next few minutes, graduate Jordan Kenney tallied her first goal of the season, connecting on a shot off a free position. Both teams swapped turnovers once more as the half winded down, with junior Natalie Williams assisting Lamoreaux for the last goal of the half, putting Frostburg on top 17-0 at the break.

Not even a minute into the third, FSU connected again, with Leonardi feeding Haney. With senior Whitney Crosby now in goal for Frostburg, WVWC found themselves with a free position, firing away but being denied by the FSU netminder. On the other end, Leonard picked up another assist, finding Lamoreaux for a 19-0 advantage. FSU put another one away not even a minute later, succeeding on a man-up opportunity, as Keller fired the ball into the back of the net off another free position. As both teams battled for the next two minutes, Boss collected another goal off a pass from Kenney to bring the score to 21-0 with 7:37 left in the third. Crosby picked up another save in the next few minutes, denying another try from Wesleyan, who then put their following attempt wide. Stone and Haney took two more tries at goal, with Haney knotting her second try on a free position, putting Frostburg ahead 22-0 heading into the fourth.

WVWC took the first shot at goal of the final quarter, with Crosby earning the save, as FSU put away their first try, with Haney tacking on another. Crosby stood in the way of another shot from Wesleyan, this time off a free position, as Haney assisted freshman Abigail Warner to bring the game to 24-0. Junior Delaney Devers caused a turnover on the defensive end, setting up Frostburg's offense, resulting in Haney feeding O'Neill for another Frostburg score. WVWC scooped up the next draw control and marched down for a shot, again being denied by Crosby on their next two tries at goal. Crawford connected on a try at goal off a feed from Haney, as just over two minutes later Stone knotted another on another free position attempt for FSU. With time winding out, Frostburg tallied two more goals, as Reitz found Lamoreaux and Crawford scored on a man-down situation, bringing the final score to 29-0.

Frostburg had 13 players score in the game, as Haney led the way with nine points on five goals and four assists, as Badolato knotted four goals and DeMaio, Lamoreaux, and Boss each scored three. Crosby and Gray combined for FSU's first shutout of the season, as Crosby collected six saves and Gray earned one.

With the win, Frostburg improves to a record of 9-5, remaining undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 record, while Wesleyan drops to 4-11 overall.
