Women's Lacrosse 2025 Season Preview
FROSTBURG, Md. - Frostburg State Athletics will be taking a preview of each team competing in the spring season, covering nine total sports. Over the next couple weeks, each team will be broken down into their matchups, key players, and overall outlook for their season and program. To start the third and final week is Women's Lacrosse.
Overall
Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse is set to begin their 58th ever season, once again being placed at the top of the MEC Preseason Poll for the sixth consecutive year. Stephanie King has taken over the program for her first year as head coach, having served as the assistant for the last two years. King welcomes Assistant Coach Jenna Ranney to her staff, while also bringing back Lucy Baukhages for her third season as a volunteer.
Last Season
FSU is coming off their second straight MEC regular season title, as well as their second straight MEC Championship title. The Bobcats showed a 13-5 overall record in 2024, soaring for a perfect 8-0 record in conference competition. Frostburg put together an eight-game win streak to round out their season, taking over the MEC, rounding out the playoffs with wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Charleston (WV), defeating the Golden Eagles 13-7 for the crown.
Frostburg swept all of the major post season awards a year ago, with Neila Haney repeating as MEC Offensive Player of the Year, Maura O'Neill receiving MEC Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach at the time Taylor Cline, taking her third straight MEC Coach of the Year distinction. Haney and O'Neill were joined by Kerri Hayes and Jessie Bare on the All-MEC First Team, while Camden DeMaio, Izzy Kelly, and Nicole Gray were named Second Team All-MEC, and Megan Keller received All-MEC Honorable Mention. Haney rounded out the awards on the field with Second Team All-Region honors, while the team as a whole received the IWLCA Division II Community Awareness Award, while also being named an Academic Honor Squad by the IWLCA.
The Returners
King is happy to welcome back a tremendous number of returners form last years squad, seeing 29 players return from the active 2024 roster, having had O'Neill, Lilly Stephens, Anna Kearney, Mckenna Shay, Jordan Kenney, and Whitney Crosby all finish out their Bobcat careers last season.
Haney returns for her junior year, leading the team in goals (55), assists (28), and points (83) just a year ago. Joining her in the attack position is DeMaio, who comes back as a graduate to provide Frostburg with veteran talent up front, as well as senior Julia Badolato, both who scored over 35 goals last year rounding out the top three scorers for FSU.
The Bobcats continue to be loaded at the midfield position, bringing back Hayes who contributed 32 goals in 2024, and Emily Lamoreaux who saw 25 goals and eight assists, as they both represent the upper-class this season. Senior Savanna Reitz looks to return to the midfield, having seen sometime in the faceoff circle as well a season ago, along with junior Daniella Boss, who put up seven goals and six assists last year.
With a well-rounded defense, Bare, Kelly, and Keller all look to fill their place of protection, alongside senior Delaney Devers, all who saw a significant amount of time in the backline last season. Kelly led the team in caused turnovers during 2024, going for a total of 39 while also scooping up 31 groundballs. Bare saw 29 CT's and 35 groundballs, while Keller finished with 26 and 25, and Devers with 14 and 15. The main four will look to stand in front of Gray, who returns as a senior in goal, as she made 118 total saves last year for a .484 save percentage and a 9.40 goals against average. White Crosby returns as senior goalkeeper as well, appearing in two games a season ago.
The Newcomers
King brings in 10 new faces, welcoming in a freshman class of nine, along with one transfer. Gigi Meyer and Syndey Serio serve as the duo of freshmen attackers, while freshmen Megan Gray, Julia Bannister, and Giselle Coulombe, along with sophomore Emma Raville, who transferred from Wilkes, will sit behind them at midfield. The freshmen defensive trio of Sophie Anderson, Kamryn Lee, and Makenzie Kerner plan to back up freshman Berkley Brown, who comes in as a goalkeeper.
