Four Place in Top-6 of Weight Class as Women's Wrestling Secures Eighth Place Finish at Warrior Open
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Women's Wrestling team took eighth overall in the Warrior Open held on Sunday by East Stroudsburg.
Freshman Faith Day started in the 103 lbs weight class for Frostburg, kicking things off a with a tech fall over her first opponent of the day, sitting in the No. 5 slot. Day followed by winning her first match in the consolation bracket, also by a tech fall. Freshmen Charvi Bethu and Shaylee Mokshefski also picked up a win each in 103, both securing a tech fall as well.
Sophomore Aurora Walters saw time in the 117 lbs weight class, receiving a bye in the first round, before falling in her next two matches to end her day. Sophomore Jada Fowler represented the Bobcats in the 124 lbs weight class as the No. 2 seed, securing two pinfalls in her first two matches, both in under 50 seconds. Fowler then took her next match by decision, putting her in the semifinals. Fowler fell in the semifinal round, where she was sent to the third place match, where she finished fourth.
Being the lone Bobcat in the 131 lbs weight class, sophomore Brianna Holcomb was given a bye to start, as she later climbed back in the consolation bracket, taking four straight wins by a pinfall and three tech falls, sliding her into sixth place. Freshman Trinity Butler took down her first opponent of the day in the 138 lbs weight class, with a pinfall for Frostburg's lone win in 138, with freshman Amber Hunter-Snyder seeing time on the mat as well.
Junior Solana Mottola received a bye to open up competition in the 145 lbs weight class for FSU, winning by tech fall in her first match of play. Mottola picked up another pinfall in the round of 16, before finishing her day with another pinfall in the round of eight. Senior Shani Tyson also helped represent the Bobcats well in 145, receiving a bye to start also, before taking her first two matches of competition by pinfall and tech fall. Being sent to the consolation bracket in the round of eight, Toni secured two more pins to finish in sixth.
Juniors Sarah Sunday and Samira Stephens both showed time in the 160 lbs weight class, with the former taking her lone win by tech fall, and the latter picking up a win by injury default. Sophomore Maria Hiles started off strong in the 180 lbs weight class, getting a victory by pinfall for her lone win of the day. Sophomore Jocelyn Cacek dominated in the 207 weight class, winning her first two matches by pinfall, and securing another pinfall in the third place match, to take the third place crown. Freshman Lorelei Hartman also saw time in 207, winning her first match by pinfall.
Frostburg finished in the top 10, taking eighth place as a team. The Bobcats remain on the road for their next meet, traveling to Adrian, MI to compete against Adrian College on Saturday, November 9 at 11 AM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
