MEC Women's Soccer Quarterfinal Preview: #4N WVWC vs #1N Frostburg State
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team is set to host West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.
How They Got Here: Frostburg comes into the game as the North Division one seed, having clinched their fifth straight division title. FSU is riding a six-game unbeaten streak and sports a record of 14-2-2, including an 11-1-2 MEC record, which is the second-best mark in the conference.
WVWC finished the regular season with a record of 6-9-3, including a 4-8-3 record in conference. Wesleyan secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Glenville State in their penultimate regular season contest, which ended up being the difference between the sides in the fight for the final spot in the South.
The Matchup: Frostburg holds the all-time advantage over WVWC with a 6-1 record, as Wesleyan's only win in the series was the first-ever meeting between the sides in 2019.
The Players: FSU is led by the conference's top defensive unit, including Defensive Player of the Year Cat Smith, which has allowed just 10 goals this season. Joining her on the defensive line is Second Team All-MEC selection Mei Homman, while First Teamer Katie Sterne is between the sticks as the conference's leader in save percentage (.882) and goals against (6). Offensively, All-MEC Honorable Mention Madi Allen leads the team in scoring with eight goals, while First Team midfielder Carly Gillette is second on seven goals and an assist.
Wesleyan's attack is headlined by Honorable Mention selection Maggie Queen, the team's scoring leader at five goals. Also receiving HM honors is defender Abby Fowler, who is also second on the team in minutes played.
The Rest of the Field: Across the other matches of the MEC tournament, South Division champions Charleston (WV) host the North's four seed Wheeling, while North two seed Fairmont faces South three seed Concord and South two seed West Virginia State hosts North three seed West Liberty.
