Kush, Pintar Help Women's Tennis Pick up Split Between Spartans, Marlins
NORFOLK, Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Tennis team split the opening day of their Spring Break trip with a 7-0 loss to Norfolk State before pulling out a close 4-3 win over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday.
Against the Division I Spartans, junior Alyssa Kush and senior Lorena Pintar fought their way to a tiebreak at No. 1 doubles, just falling short 7-6 (7-5), as NSU won the second spot 6-1 and received a forfeit to complete the trifecta. Norfolk State then went clean through singles play, not dropping a single set en route to the 7-0 victory.
In the second matchup against the Division III Marlins, Kush and Pintar avenged their earlier loss with a dominant 6-1 win at the top doubles spot. Sophomore Ella Troxell and senior Femke Hofkamp, however, would suffer the same fate as the former two in their No. 2 match, dropping a 7-6 (7-5) tiebreak as VWU took the doubles points
Troxell (6-1, 6-2) and Pintar (6-1, 6-3) would each go on to pick up sweeps at the Nos. 3 and 4 spots in singles play, where they were joined by another straight-set win from sophomore Patricia Castejon (6-3, 7-6). Virginia Wesleyan responded by winning at No. 5 and receiving a forfeit in the six spot, taking the deciding match to the top singles point. In a back-and-forth battle, Kush came out on top with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-3 victory to secure the winning meet point for the Bobcats.
With the split, Frostburg moves to 3-3 on the year and will next wrap up their road trip to Virginia State on Thursday, March 20 at 11 a.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
