Rebuck, Pettyjohn Goals Not Enough in Women's Soccer Loss to Concord

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team wasn't able to hold on to an early lead as they fell 3-2 at home to Concord on Saturday evening.

The contest was played as a part of the Bobcats' annual Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, as the team also welcomed youth sides from local club AVID.

FSU began the game on the front foot, earning a pair of early corners and threatening the CU back line. As the ball was headed out on the second corner, senior Skylar Ehart lofted it back into the box, where it was flicked on by classmate Morgan Mrizek and tucked home by sophomore Mollie Rebuck for a 1-0 advantage after just seven minutes.

The Mountain Lions then gained control of the game, getting away three chances in a 15-minute period, with a pair of efforts going wide and sophomore Kayla Doty making a catch high to her right. Rebuck had another shot to score after being played down the right wing, but put her effort just off target. With 13 minutes until the half, a blocked Concord shot eventually bounced out to the top of the 18, where Tiana Campbell placed a volleyed effort into the bottom corner to even things at 1-1.

CU came bolting out of the gate to start the second half, as Campbell forced Doty into a save within the first two minutes. Just 40 seconds later, Caitlin Webster made a run into the box from the right side and crossed to Daisy Cook for an easy finish six yards from goal, handing the Mountain Lions a 2-1 lead.

Rebuck tried to immediately respond, firing from nearly 30 yards out, bouncing the ball into the arms of keeper Maddie Loughborough. Five minutes later, Concord doubled their advantage, as Campbell was adjudged to have been brought down in the box, as she converted the penalty herself for a 3-1 lead.

Having the lead, CU began to drop off and FSU found their footing again, with sophomore Ana Davis and Rebuck each putting shots wide of the mark. At the midway point of the half, Rebuck did very well to hold the ball up and turn to play junior Chelsea Pettyjohn through on goal, who took a pair of touches and was able to finish past Loughborough to get the Bobcats back in the game at 3-2.

Rebuck then curled a shot wide while senior Mary Greco fired a volley over the bar off a corner, looking for an equalizer. Entering the final five minutes, Concord's Molly Watters was assessed a second yellow card for time wasting, putting them down to 10 players. Sophomore Ellie Fiedler put a shot high of the crossbar, while Mrizek had one late chance but Loughborough fell on it to end things with the Mountain Lions on top 3-2.

The sides were even at 10 shots apiece, with CU getting five on goal to FSU's four.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 6-4-1 on the year, while Concord improves to 6-3-2. The Bobcats remain at home to face West Virginia State on Wednesday, October 15 at 4:30 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
