Lagunas Scores First Career Goal as Warriors Too Much for Field Hockey
EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team dropped their road contest to No. 3 East Stroudsburg by a final score of 5-1 on Thursday afternoon.
ESU quickly took control on offense to start the game, seeing their first shot just over a minute in. Junior goalkeeper Zoe Barnes was able to stand in the way, racking up her first save of the afternoon. East Stroudsburg was able to pick up a penalty corner moments later, helping them set up for their first score of the game and an early 1-0 advantage two minutes into the first quarter. The Warriors continued to dominate possession and attempts at goal, receiving three more penalty corners and firing another shot that was blocked. Off the third penalty corner, ESU was able to find the back of the cage again, slicing it home for a 2-0 lead around the 10 minute mark. The first quarter was all East Stroudsburg, as the Warriors stranded together two more shots, one being saved by Barnes and one finding its way in, guiding ESU to a 3-0 lead after the first 15.
Both teams saw a quiet and slow second quarter, with each team taking turns with the ball. East Stroudsburg earned another penalty corner right off the bat, sending in a shot that was blocked by Frostburg's defense. ESU quickly rebounded the ball, ripping another shot in the box, but just missed sending the ball off the post and back into play. Both teams saw a back-and-forth rally for several minutes, as the Warriors set up for one more try at goal in the quarter, allowing Barnes to rack up one more save before the half, as the score read 3-0 in favor of ESU at the break.
East Stroudsburg changed goalies to start the third, as once again, the Warriors fired away the first shot of the quarter, again being denied by Barnes. FSU's offense started to work together, finding their first look at goal on the day, as senior Zoe Reading sent her attempt wide. With the ball still in possession of the Bobcats, senior Olivia Wenzel went to insert Frostburg's first penalty corner of the game. Wenzel sent the ball in, finding the stick of junior Paige Leitzel, as she fired one away at the cage but was denied by ESU's goalie. FSU was able to repeat the same play, with Wenzel inserting another penalty corner, allowing freshman Hannah Haberkorn to send a shot in, but aimed just wide. After both teams swapped possession, the Warriors regained the ball in their offensive half, sending a shot in off a penalty corner, as Barnes stood in the way of that attempt at well. East Stroudsburg sent one more shot off target, before adding to their score to end the quarter up 4-0.
The Warriors kept their momentum from their third quarter goal, striking again in the first few seconds of the fourth. East Stroudsburg continued to pound shots off at goal after earning a pair of penalty corners, as Barnes was credited with her final save of the day. With just a few minutes left in regulation, FSU started to push at goal, trying to get on the board, as Reading took another rip at goal, sending it wide. With 20 seconds left, sophomore Emma Price sent in a shot from inside, with it being knocked away from the goalie and finding the stick of freshman Layla Lagunas, who was able to send it into the back of the cage for a 5-1 final score.
Frostburg fired six shots on the day and earned two penalty corners, while Barnes finished with six saves in goal.
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 3-5 on the season, while East Stroudsburg moves to 8-2. The Bobcats return home for their next contest, hosting a tough opponent in No. 5 Bloomsburg on Saturday, October 5 at 5 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
