Phillips, Kearney Sweep ECC Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week Awards, Walstrum Named to Honor Roll
WEST BABYLON, N.Y. – Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse swept the ECC Player of the Week awards that were announced on Monday, with senior Wesley Phillips being named Offensive Player of the Week and senior Seamus Kearney taking Defensive Player of the Week, while fellow senior Alex Walstrum received a spot on the Honor Roll.
Phillips sparked Frostburg's offense in their pair of ECC wins last week, earning him ECC Offensive Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Phillips tallied 16 total points this past week across the two games, going for eight goals and eight assists. In the Bobcats' impressive 27-2 defeat of UDC on Wednesday, Phillips went off for four goals and four assists, taking 10 shots with seven being on goal, while also collecting four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Over the weekend in FSU's 12-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas, Phillips put up another four-goal four-assist game, firing in another 10 shots with this time six being on goal, while also seeing five ground balls and another CT.
Kearney had himself a memorable week on defense, helping Frostburg's backline give up just four goals across two games. Kearney collected three ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers, and a goal in the team's victory over the Firebirds, before leading the team with four CT's and five ground balls against the Spartans, while also finding the back of the net once more. With his performance on Wednesday against UDC, Kearney became the program's all-time caused turnover leader, hitting the 122 mark to surpass the Hall of Famer Zach Burkhardt.
Walstrum, continuing what he does best, showed another impressive outing in the X this past week, going for a total of 18-for-20 on face-offs. He went 11-for-12 in Frostburg's contest with the Firebirds, being credited with a team-high nine ground balls and an assist as well. Walstrum then showed another nearly perfect effort against STAC, going 7-for-8 with eight more ground balls.
