Point Park Nets Second Half Winner to Defeat Men's Soccer on Senior Day

FROSTBURG, Md.The Frostburg Men's Soccer Team dropped their Sunday afternoon match against Point Park 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.

Before the game, FSU recognized its eight seniors in Renzo Vargas, Sebastian Vargas, Danny Medina, Kevin Garcia-Torres, Nick Varkarotas, Mateo Cuadros, Carlos Quintero Rivas, and Jason Guevara as they round out their Bobcat careers.

The first ten minutes of the match were quiet for both teams, with the first chance of the game coming from Frostburg on back-to-back shots by Renzo Vargas as he headed one from a corner kick, which was saved on the line before he fired one to the right of the goal. FSU's next chance occurred just five minutes later, as sophomore Mason Salvadge took a shot that was off target as well. Nearing the midway point of the half, the Bobcats managed two more shots with Cuadros firing one above the goal and junior Anthony Diaz having an effort blocked, resulting in the ball being knocked out of the box by a PPU defender.

Nearly 30 minutes into the game, Point Park had their first opportunity of the night, which missed high, while an effort from just outside the box was easily gathered by sophomore keeper Jan Foret. After a Pioneer header off a corner was blocked before reaching goal, Sebastian Vargas lined one from the 15-yard line that Capponi had to leap to catch to end the first half with a 0-0 score.

With the Pioneers having three shots in the latter part of the first half, they brought that momentum into the second, generating two chances before Ido Chalamish latched onto a bouncing ball behind the defense and found the back of the net, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. Frostburg found themselves right back into PPU's territory as Renzo Vargas fired two shots within a span of two minutes, one that was out left and the other right at Capponi. Point Park managed another shot that went wide before FSU fired off a pair of efforts by Salvadge and Quintero Rivas, both of which were saved by Capponi. Still searching for the equalizer, sophomore Dominic Good blazed a shot over the bar as the Pioneers held on to their advantage.

The back-and-forth action continued, as Chalamish fired wide, while Quintero Rivas forced Capponi into a tip save around the post. Diaz then missed high, as two minutes later the task became difficult for FSU, with Cuadros receiving a straight red card to go down a man. Salvadge nearly got the desired equalizer, getting onto the end of a long free kick, but his shot was put just high. Foret made a pair of fine saves following a Point Park corner to keep the deficit at one, but Frostburg wasn't able to make their way up field for many attacking chances. The final shots of the game both came from PPU, one of which went well wide and the other Foret had to dive to his left to save, ending the game with the Pioneers coming out on top 1-0.

FSU held a 14-12 advantage in shots, with five on target compared to Point Park's six.

With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 5-8-2 on the year, while PPU improves to 7-7-1. Frostburg is back in Bobcat Stadium for their home finale as they face Wheeling on Wednesday, October 29 at 5 PM. For more information, visit frostburgsports.com.
