Field Hockey Drops Road Game to #9 Mountaineers
MANSFIELD, Pa. – The Frostburg State field hockey team lost on the road to No. 9 Mansfield on Saturday by a 4-0 final.
After back-and-forth possession for the first six minutes, the Bobcats took the first shot of the game, as junior Mikyla Rineer got off back-to-back shots, the first being blocked and the follow up having to be saved by the Mountie goalie. FSU earned a corner and got off two more shots but were unable to come up with a goal. Possession then swung to the Bobcat side of the field, where Mansfield eventually capitalized on a rebound, scoring the game's opening goal in the thirteenth minute.
Trailing 1-0 going into the second quarter, FSU keeper, senior Zoe Barnes, stood strong, coming up with three saves in the second to keep the score at 1-0. The Bobcats got off one shot and were awarded one corner in the frame, as the game went to half with the score remaining 1-0.
Mansfield came out of the midway point break ready to go, adding their second goal with just over five minutes gone. Barnes again fended off three shots on goal to keep Frostburg in the game. The hosts peppered the cage with eight shots compared to just one for Frostburg during the period.
The final quarter was all Mounties, controlling possession, corners and shots from start to finish. Barnes was forced into five saves within the first five minutes before MU broke through to make it 3-0. Keeping FSU from breaking out, Mansfield added their final score two and a half minutes from time to make it a 4-0 victory.
With the loss, FSU moves to 0-3 on the season and Mansfield is now 3-1. The Bobcats will play again tomorrow, September 14 with their home opener coming against Wingate at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com
