Mrizek's First Half Strike the Difference in Women's Soccer Road Win Over D&E
ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Women's Soccer team took a narrow 1-0 victory on the road against Davis & Elkins Wednesday evening.
Both sides had trouble finding chances early on, as the first effort of the contest came after 12 minutes from a Senators shot that went well wide. FSU's opening shot was fired by junior Madison Hinton, though right at keeper Gabriela Acevedo. As the Bobcats pressed high up the field, sophomore Cassidy Paige blocked a clearance that fell right to senior Morgan Mrizek with space in front of goal, but she fired just left of the post.
D&E came back down a minute and a half later, putting another shot off target before Mrizek got a chance at redemption, doing well to fake out a defender at the top of the box and curling her shot into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead. Davis & Elkins looked to respond in the next six minutes, getting a pair of corner kicks from which they produced a pair of efforts, but one went high and another was excellently saved by sophomore Kayla Doty before crossing the goal line.
Having survived the hosts' chances, it was Frostburg's turn to pepper their opposition goal, as senior Mary Greco had a shot blocked down. Sophomore Elena Fernandez and senior Hannah Clagett both drew saves from Acevedo, then Gillette fired inches wide on a left-footed effort. With two minutes to go, senior Skylar Ehart forced Acevedo into a scrambling save to her right before classmate Jayme Sooy went wide left as the clock hit zero for the half.
The Senators won an early corner to start the second period but couldn't fashion a chance out of it. Greco and Paige then both tried to test Acevedo but ended up shooting off target. Off another D&E corner, substitute keeper Mia Graff clawed a shot away from under the bar before crossing the line to keep FSU in the lead. Each side then traded wide shots before the Bobcats reasserted control.
Ehart put another effort off to the left from a corner, then sophomores Ana Davis and Mollie Rebuck both forced Acevedo into action, the latter's shot almost getting all the way over the line before being cleared. Davis & Elkins had some set pieces late on in attempts of getting the ball into the box, but Graff and the Bobcat defense shut them out the rest of the way to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Frostburg held a 16-8 shots advantage, with seven on target to D&E's three.
With the win, FSU improves to 6-3-1 on the year, while the Senators drop to 0-6-4. The Bobcats return home to face Concord on Saturday, October 11 where they will be hosting their annual Pink Game. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
