Men's Wrestling Takes Down Shippensburg, Fairmont State in Home Opener
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's wrestling team hosted Shippensburg and Fairmont for their Bobcat Duals on Sunday, winning 26-14 over the Raiders and 23-17 over the Fighting Falcons.
The Bobcats started strong, winning the first five matches against the Raiders. Sophomore Nate Wilhelm was the first of those wins to set the tone with an 11-5 decision win at 125. Freshman Tanner Halling continued his strong start to the year with an 18-3 tech fall to earn FSU five team points. Sophomore Chase Bell (10-1) and junior Gage Heilbrun (16-6) both then won by major decisions. Senior Nico D'Amico made it five in a row with a 4-2 decision for a 19-0 match score. SU was able find their footing to win three of the next four bouts, with Frostburg's win in the run coming through sophomore Andrew Wolfanger at 184 with a 6-2 decision. Junior Gavin Bage finished off the opening dual with a 12-2 major decision to seal the 26-14 final.
In the second match against Fairmont, the visitors took the opening bout with a 12-4 major decision before Halling would get his second win on the day, this time picking up a pin. The Falcons would win the next two, an 8-1 decision at 141 and 19-10 major decision at 149, taking a 13-6 lead. Freshman Calvin Kraisser got Frostburg going again with a 15-0 tech fall to tie things up before the Bobcats rolled through the next three as well. Graduate Alex Blake notched an 11-3 major decision at 165, while redshirt junior Noah Reho and Wolfanger both took 6-4 decisions to lead 21-11. Fairmont kept themselves alive with a win by injury default at 197, taking things into the final bout at 21-17. Bage would hold on to take the final bout 5-4 thanks to securing the riding time point to earn the match win, which stood at 23-17 after a one-point team conduct reduction.
With the victories, Frostburg improves to 2-1 on the year. The Bobcats will return to action on Sunday, November 23 when they will face Gannon and Emory & Henry in Fairmont, WV. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
