Mock, Kunkle Lead Volleyball Past WVWC in Road Sweep
BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Frostburg State volleyball team swept West Virginia Wesleyan on the road Friday evening for its second straight match in straight sets.
Frostburg, coming off a 3-0 win over Davis & Elkins earlier in the week, had to travel to face the third ranked team out of the South Division, with Wesleyan winning three of its last four matches.
FSU ran out to an early 5-2 lead to start things off in the first after junior Paige Mock and freshman Adele Evans put up a block on the first point, with the former adding an ace to go with a kill from sophomore Dani Kunkle. Wesleyan would tie things up after a four-point run at 8-8, as the teams went back-and-forth to a narrow 12-11 Frostburg lead. Mock took over the set with a kill followed by two straight aces, as Evans joined freshman Nevaeh Ware on a block to put FSU in front 15-11. Again, WVWC fought back, taking four consecutive points before netting five of six to take a shock 21-20 lead. A pair of errors either side of a Mock kill were followed by back-to-back Wesleyan points, as the set stood even at 23-23. Sophomore Emery Kuebler then provided a pair of assists to classmate Devin Brunk and Kunkle that would give FSU the first set win 25-23.
WVWC looked to regain their footing in the second set, leading 3-1 early before back-to-back kills from Mock and junior Maya Johnson evened things up. The sides traded points as Wesleyan was able to hold on to a constant two-point lead up to a 10-8 score. Frostburg hit quickly, as Brunk and Johnson put down scores while Mock and freshman Bailey Rafferty served up aces, with the latter joining Kunkle on back-to-back kills to surge ahead 16-11. FSU kept their foot on the pedal, as Mock had three kills down the stretch, also joining Brunk on a block, as Kunkle ended the set 25-16 on a kill to go up 2-0 in the match.
Frostburg jumped out to an early 5-2 lead on scores from Brunk and Kunkle and an Evans-Kunkle block. Wesleyan would respond with force, taking their biggest lead of the day with eight points in a row and going up 10-5. A kill from Johnson would cut off the run, though WVWC still was able to hold a six-point lead in hopes of getting back into the match. Frostburg would slowly whittle down the lead, as Mock, Kunkle, Rafferty, Brunk, and Evans all recorded kills in helping to tie things up at 18-18. After Wesleyan scored five of the next seven to go up 23-20, Mock and Kunkle would have back-to-back-to-back kills, while a Wesleyan attack error gave FSU the lead 24-23. WVWC was able to even things up and fend off a pair of set points, but Evans put the ball down followed by another Wesleyan error to win 27-25 for the sweep.
Kunkle and Mock both had nine kills, with Brunk close behind on seven. Kunkle led the defense with 15 digs while Kuebler had 20 assists, as Mock finished with four aces and combined with Evans on a match-high five blocks apiece.
With the win Frostburg moves to 8-12 and 3-6 in MEC play, whlie Wesleyan falls to 13-8 and 5-4 in the conference. FSU next travels to Point Park on Tuesday, October 28 for a 7 PM start. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
