Volleyball Defeated by Yellow Jackets on the Road

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team dropped their Saturday road contest against West Virginia State by a 3-0 final. 
 
West Virginia State tapped down the first two points of the match, as Frostburg received their first point of the match off a Yellow Jacket service error.  WVSU surged for the next seven consecutive points, putting them on top 9-1.  Ending their spark, West Virginia State had a bad serve, giving another point to the Bobcats.  Putting together another splurge of points, the Yellow Jackets took the next six points, until FSU was given a pair of scores off two more errors from WVSU.  With now a 15-4 score, Frostburg started to show some offense, with sophomore Paige Mock racking up the first kill of the match for the Bobcats.  Junior Amanda Knieper then provided back-to-back service aces, bringing the game to 18-9.  Freshman Dani Kunkle knocked down the final point of the set for FSU, as West Virginia State continued to rack up the points, taking set one 25-10. 
 
The Yellow Jackets knotted the first point of set two, going on to pick up the first three points of the set.  Frostburg earned their first three points off errors from WVSU, until senior Brenna Siperko hit down a kill to cut the game to 5-4 with West Virginia State on top.  The Yellow Jackets didn't allow the Bobcats to get any closer, picking up the next four points to push ahead 9-4.  WVSU gave FSU two free scores, but West Virginia State continued to dominate, using their powerful offense to extend the game to 15-6.  Frostburg continued to struggle on both sides of the net, not having an answer for the Yellow Jacket's offense, and picking up points just off West Virginia State errors.  Freshman Devin Brunk was able to secure a service ace to see the score at 20-9, as Kunkle put down two more kills to before the match ended.  Sophomore Emery Kuebler and senior Fiona Gonzalez Medina dished out the assists to Kunkle, as the final score read 25-12 in favor of WVSU. 
 
Frostburg kept set three close to start, as Mock swatted down a kill for FSU's first point of the set.  West Virginia State started to push in front, finding themselves with a 5-3 lead.  Senior AJ Thompson was credited with a kill, until the Yellow Jackets took the next six straight points for a 11-4 advantage.  Brunk was able to pick up a kill, followed by the Bobcats getting two more scores off a kill from Kunkle and an attack error by WVSU, putting the game at 12-7.  Both teams swapped points back and forth, until West Virginia State increased their lead to eight.  FSU strung together a trio of points, with Thompson providing a pair of kills and Brunk seeing one, causing the score to read 19-13.  Brunk, Mock, and sophomore Maya Johnson each put down a kill, trying to keep Frostburg in the game, as the trio brought the score to 23-16.  WVSU was able to stay on top, not giving the Bobcats anymore points, as the Yellow Jackets took set three 25-16. 
 
Kunkle led the offense for Frostburg with a team-high five kills, while also providing six digs.  Redshirt junior Phoebe Lingold dished out a team-high 10 assists, while Gonzalez Medina secured a team-high 12 digs. 
 
With the loss, Frostburg falls to 6-13 on the season, while West Virginia State moves to 12-9.  The Bobcats go back on the road Tuesday, October 22 to face Shippensburg at 7 PM for their next match.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
