Four Tally Goals in Men's Soccer's Home Win Over Cardinals

FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Men's Soccer team defeated the Wheeling Cardinals by a final score of 4-1 on Wednesday evening at home.

Frostburg looked to put on an early lead but were a little too aggressive pushing down field, getting called offside.  Wheeling was able to take possession, taking the ball down field to earn a corner kick, which led to a shot off target.  After back and forth play for a few minutes, junior Carlos Quintero Rivas ripped a shot bottom center that was pushed away by the Cardinal's keeper.  Sophomore Hugo Portillo then set himself up for a shot, sending the ball far left and out of play.  After fouls were exchanged by both teams, WU put a try at goal, looking to jump ahead, but sent it way over top.  FSU took over possession on their offensive half, placing down a corner kick, but was unable to get a shot off.  After the ball stayed at the feet of the Bobcats, Quintero Rivas sent the ball to the middle, finding senior Laki Psallidas, who sliced it home for a 1-0 Frostburg lead with just under 15 minutes left in the first half.

Two minutes later, Psallidas sent in another shot that went off target, before FSU picked up another corner kick.  Senior Zach Harpel put in for a chance at goal off the inbound but was denied by the keeper.  The Cardinals held the ball in their possession to round out the half, setting up for a corner kick, followed by getting called offside, sending the game into the break with a 1-0 game with the Bobcats in front.

WU started the second half with a corner, as FSU quickly took back the ball, sending it down field.  Quintero Rivas was set up for a goal, striking it in the back of the net off an assist from senior Abdur-Rahman Neama, pushing Frostburg's advantage to 2-0 just two minutes into the second.  The Cardinals tried to respond with a quick shot inside but were unable to connect.  The Bobcats pushed up on offense, setting up senior Caleb Dell for a shot outside the box, who ripped it a little too hard as the ball carried wide left.  Wheeling tried once again to get on the board but was unsuccessful, setting up FSU at the other end, where freshman Andrew Denard slotted one home to push the Bobcats ahead 3-0 just over a fourth into the half.

Both teams continued to push on offense, sending tries in the box but were unable to find the back of the net.  On their next attempt, WU sent in a shot from way outside that found the goal for the Cardinals first score of the night and a 3-1 game.  Freshman Dominic Good traded a chance with Wheeling, before WU sent in two more tries at goal, one just missing and hitting off the woodwork.  With just over a minute and a half left in regulation, FSU tacked on another score, as junior Sebastian Vargas hit Good with a pass on the left side, setting him up for a nice finish and 4-0 Bobcat victory as time rounded out.

Frostburg led in shots 13-9, with six of theirs being on target compared to Wheeling's one.  The Cardinals held the slight advantage in corner kicks 6-4.

With the win, Frostburg jumps to 6-1-1 on the season, while Wheeling falls to 0-7-2.  The Bobcats go back on the road for their next contest, traveling to face Charleston (WV) at 4 PM on Sunday, October 6.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
