Field Hockey Tops Slippery Rock at Home in Double Overtime Thriller
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team topped Slippery Rock at home in double overtime by a final score of 1-0 on Tuesday evening.
Frostburg started off strong, getting the ball down the field and earning the first shot of the day from sophomore Paige Leitzel. Leitzel's shot led to a penalty corner for FSU, where junior Femke Hofkamp was able to attack the goal, but ended up sending the ball wide. The Rock was able to force the ball out of their defensive end, passed through midfield, and into their offensive zone. With the momentum, Slippery Rock tried to score, but sophomore Zoe Barnes was able to block the ball in goal. The Bobcats earned four shots on goal, three penalty corners, and two saves in the first quarter as both teams remained scoreless.
Quickly to start the second quarter, Frostburg took a penalty corner, as SRU was able to defend and get the ball into their offensive half but saw no opportunities. Leitzel fired the lone shot of the quarter for either team, as both teams traded fouls and possession, keeping the game scoreless at the half.
Majority of the third quarter was played in The Rocks defensive half, as FSU had plenty of opportunities, but Grace Bunker was able to make great saves in goal for Slippery Rock. The Bobcats put up six shots to Slippery Rock's two, as Leitzel took two more at goal, and senior Emilie Bonhivert, junior Ava Waddell, senior Ashlyn Cave, and freshman Gracie Daniels each took one. Having the edge in shots did not benefit Frostburg, as the score remained 0-0 going into the fourth.
Both teams started to show their frustration and tiredness, as neither team could put together an offensive run. Junior Olivia Wenzel took a shot at goal six minutes in that was fought off by Bunker, which led to an unsuccessful penalty corner for the Bobcats. SRU tried at goal two minutes later, but missed wide. Senior Zoe Reading took her first shot of the day with time running down in the quarter, but was shut down by Bunker, as the game headed to overtime.
Neither team was able to strike in the first overtime, as Slippery Rock took the lone shot of extra time, as Barnes knocked it away. Heading now into double overtime, both teams traded shots to open the extra period. Frostburg's defense was able to block a shot from SRU, while Barnes earned herself another big save. With around three minutes left, Leitzel found the ball at her stick off a penalty corner, was able to beat The Rock's defense and end the game, with a hard shot to the back of the cage, allowing FSU to take home the hard fought 1-0 victory.
The Bobcats led in shots 16-11, with 11 of their own being on target, and led in penalty corners 11-5. Barnes finished with a total of six saves in goal.
With the conclusion of the game, Frostburg moves to an overall record of 7-4 while Slippery Rock falls to an overall record of 2-8. The Bobcats are back in action on Saturday, October 7 as they travel to take on West Chester at 1 PM. For more information, please visit frostburgsports.com.
