Weakley Reaches 2,000 Career Points Milestone in Women's Basketball's Home Win Over Golden Eagles
FROSTBURG, Md. – Senior Emilee Weakley became the first-ever to reach 2,000 career points in Frostburg State Women's Basketball history on Saturday afternoon in the team's 63-53 victory over Charleston (WV).
Charleston got the game rolling with a three ball from deep, taking a 3-0 lead for over two minutes. Senior Jasmine Johnson got Frostburg on the board with a jumper from the foul line, as UC answered to move in front 5-2. At the 6:28 mark, Weakley was fouled, sending her to the foul line where she went one-for-two for her 2,000th point. The Golden Eagles remained in front as the quarter carried on, as Weakley converted two more free throws from the charity stripe. Charleston took their lead to 12-5, as Weakley, senior Taylor Smith, and sophomore Alanna Tate worked to get the game to 12-11. UC nailed a three on their next trip down to advance their lead to four, increasing their lead then to six after another triple. Weakley responded with a three of her own to bring the score to 18-15, but the Golden Eagles connected on one more jumper for the last points of the quarter and a 20-15 edge.
Both teams saw a dry start to open the second, with neither team connecting on a shot in the first three minutes, as Johnson was given two blocks. At the 7:01 mark, graduate Sarah Shamdeen laid in the first points of the second for either team, with both squads then going silent for another two minutes. Weakley put in another layup for Frostburg, as two more free throws from the Bobcats gave them their first lead of the game at 21-20. Tate added three free throws to FSU's lead, as UC still remained scoreless, struggling to shoot from the floor. Tate again gave Frostburg another two points, this time off a layup in the paint, as Charleston was finally able to find the bottom of the net with just 2:23 left in the quarter. Freshman Julie Spinelli got on the board at the charity stripe, knocking down the final points of the half for a 27-22 FSU lead at the break.
UC got a free throw to go to begin the third, as Weakley connected from deep to advance the game to 30-23. The Golden Eagles responded with a layup on the other end, moving the game back to a five-point margin. Weakley continued to add to Frostburg's score, until back-to-back buckets from Charleston brought them within two, 31-29. Smith quickly answered, banging a three from outside to get the game back to a five-point margin, sparking an 11-0 run for the Bobcats. Smith and Weakley each connected on another three during the run, advancing their edge to 42-29. UC broke their silence with just over one minute left in the third, scoring four more points for a 44-33 score heading into the fourth and final quarter.
Tate knocked down the first points of the fourth off a perfect trip from the foul line, as the Golden Eagles strung together six consecutive points to get the game to 46-39. A free throw from Spinelli stopped the run of UC, as a duo of points from Charleston brought the game closer, this time 49-45. Smith connected on another triple to increase the game to a seven-point differential, as Spinelli contributed four huge points as time ticked down, helping FSU sit on top 58-49 with 3:12 left in regulation. Both teams saw a slow minute, swapping steals, as Johnson and Weakley traded points with the Golden Eagles. UC put in two free throws of their own with under a minute left, bringing the game to 61-53, but a tip-in off an offensive rebound from Spinelli sealed the deal for FSU as time ticked down, having Frostburg come out on top 63-53.
Weakley led all scorers with 23 points on the day, grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds for a double-double. Smith (13) and Tate (11) were next in double figures, with the former seeing five rebounds and four assists. Spinelli provided eight points and eight rebounds.
With the win, Frostburg moves to 13-9 on the season, while Charleston goes to 12-10. The Bobcats go back on the road for their next contest, traveling to take on West Liberty on Wednesday, February 12 at 5:30 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
