GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Frostburg State field hockey team dropped a close contest on the road to Lander Sunday afternoon, losing in overtime 2-1.

The first quarter of the game played out even with the game remaining at 0-0 after the first 15. The Bobcats found some momentum early, earning a pair of corners and getting a shot on goal that was put wide by senior Paige Leitzel. Senior Zoe Barnes had a strong opening quarter, making three saves to keep FSU in the game and LU off the board.

Neither side managed to do much on offense to start the second period, with the only shot being blocked off a Lander stick. It would be the Bearcats to strike first, getting the opening goal at the 25:47 mark, as Puck Hoenderdos found Lauren Punt to fire home. Frostburg couldn't get a shot away in the frame, as the hosts outshot the Bobcats 7 to 1 in the first half.

The Bobcats fared much better to start the third, as after a Lander shot went wide, the visitors were awarded a penalty corner. Leitzel saw her effort blocked, but the rebound fell to junior Bri Macchia, who found sophomore Rachel Young for her first collegiate goal and FSU's opening score on the year, tying things at 1-1. Frostburg would continue to apply pressure, earning three corners and senior Aubree Dorsey putting one shot wide and seeing another denied by keeper Isabel Elenga. With just two seconds left in the period, Barnes preserved the tie with a late save to take things into the fourth. 

Early proceedings favored LU, earning a pair of penalty corners with one shot taken that was shut down by Barnes. With both sides trying not to give anything away, at the end of regulation, the game was 1-1 with no further shots taken in the period. In extra time, the Bearcats would find the golden goal just over a minute in as Punt turned provider for Leira Van Tilburg for the 2-1 victory.

LU held an 11-5 advantage in shots, with seven on target to FSU's two.
 
With the overtime loss, the Bobcats are now 0-2 to start the season while Lander moves to 1-0. Frostburg continues their road trip when they travel to Mansfield on Saturday, September 13 for a 1 PM start. For more information visit frostburgsports.com
