Harmon, Kennedy Net First Collegiate Goals as Men's Soccer Shuts Out WVWC
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State men's soccer picked up its first win of the year with a shutout performance over West Virginia Wesleyan 3-0.
Wesleyan put the pressure on early, earning several corners and the first shot on goal that was fended off by sophomore Jan Foret. FSU worked their way back into the game and had three shots over a six-minute span, though none were on target. That changed in the 32nd minute when senior Carlos Quintero Rivas found sophomore Dominic Good in behind and had a fantastic chip over the keeper for his first goal of the year.
The lead seemed to give Frostburg some more confidence in keeping possession, as WVWC didn't manage an attempt on goal for nearly 28 minutes. Just before the half ended, FSU added to the lead, as sophomore Andrew Denard chipped a ball into the box for freshman Inzaghi Harmon to run onto, scoring his first career goal on a volleyed blast over the keeper's head for a 2-0 advantage at the break.
There would be no let-up from Frostburg to start the second 45, as freshman Frank Stare drew a great save from netminder Matteo Marciani from just outside the 18. FSU then were awarded a penalty after a handball off a cross to the back post, but Rivas saw his effort saved and pushed away. With 25 minutes remaining, freshman Nate Kennedy put the game to bed, putting a half-volleyed effort right into the top corner off a free kick cross from graduate Mateo Cuadros.
With the three goal lead, Frostburg was able to control the remainder of the game and pick up their first win of the season. WVWC had just two shots in the entire second half, and only one of them needed saving by Foret.
FSU held an 11-7 advantage in shots, six of them on goal compared to the visitors' two. Foret finished the game with his first clean sheet of the year and two saves.
With the win, Frostburg is now 1-1 on the year and Wesleyan moves to 0-2. FSU travels to Salem (WV) on Sunday, September 14 for a 2 PM start in its first non-conference match of the year. For more information visit frostburgsports.com.
