Good, Guevara Lead Men's Soccer to Dominant Win Over Hilltoppers
FROSTBURG, Md. - A commanding opening 20 minutes helped the Frostburg State Men's Soccer team to a 4-1 home win over West Liberty on Wednesday evening.
The Hilltoppers had the game's first effort, a shot from their left side that was comfortable gathered by sophomore keeper Jan Foret just two minutes in. Freshman Frank Stare then had an initial look at goal for FSU, but his shot went high and wide of the mark. After the Bobcats settled in and started to control possession, they worked the ball down the left side, when senior Jason Guevara made a sliding challenge to win the ball at the edge of the 18 and put a ball into the box that was initially cleared, but only as far as sophomore Dom Good, who took one touch and calmly finished into the top right corner for a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes later, sophomore Mason Salvadge made a surging run on the left flank and crossed to the back post, where senior Carlos Quintero Rivas was able to muscle the ball over the line through a pair of defenders to double the advantage. Still before hitting the 20-minute mark of the half, some great ball movement between Guevara, Stare, and Quintero Rivas put the latter into the box, as he crossed to the penalty spot for Good to hit a one-time finish into the left upper 90 and a stunning 3-0 lead.
From that point, Frostburg was able to sit back and absorb some pressure, as WLU had trouble threatening Foret's goal. One effort went high and wide, while another was smartly saved by the Bobcat netminder, quickly adjusting to parry a deflected effort wide. Guevara had a shot from distance saved by Shai'ya Henry, as FSU went into the half ahead by three.
Any hopes of a miracle West Liberty comeback were swiftly shut down by Guevara, as he won the ball at midfield and dribbled 20 yards before unleashing a bolt over the head of Henry and into the back of the net for a 4-0 score. The Hilltoppers continued to be thwarted by FSU's back line, unable to register a shot until 23 minutes in, which went well wide of the mark. Stare and Salvadge both put shots off target, as the clocked ticked down to 15 minutes.
West Liberty were handed a consolation goal, as EJ Sablan let loose from far out, with the ball hitting the turf and bouncing off Foret's hands and in for a 4-1 score. That would be the last decent chance for the visitors, as their only two efforts the rest of the way were easily gathered by Foret to limit the damage to one goal and a three-score victory.
WLU ended up having an 11-10 advantage in shots, though only one of their five on target went in, while FSU had four of their five on target hit the netting.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-1-1 on the year, while West Liberty falls to 1-2-2. The Bobcats next hit the road for a non-conference match against Bloomsburg on Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. Information and udpates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
