DeMaio Powers Offense as Women's Lacrosse Holds Off Gannon's Fourth Quarter Comeback
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Women's Lacrosse team held off a comeback from Gannon to take the 18-12 victory at home on Friday evening.
Frostburg started out hot, knotting the first three goals of the game, with three different Bobcats getting on the board in senior Julia Badolato, junior Emily Lamoreaux, and sophomore Gianna Leonardi all seeing a score in the first three and a half minutes. Gannon finally answered, putting a point on the board 25 seconds later for a 3-1 game. The Golden Knights fought for a 3-2 game two minutes later, with senior Kerri Hayes moving FSU in front by two, off a feed from graduate Camden DeMaio. DeMaio received a caused turnover on the other end, as both teams exchanged possessions. Lamoreaux's next shot hit the post, as junior Neila Haney stood in the way of GU's next attempt at offense, with the Golden Knights finding things in their favor on their next time down the field to move the game to 4-3 heading into the second quarter.
Gannon earned the draw control to open up the second, before Lamoreaux found Haney for a tally and a 5-3 score to start the quarter. Hayes fired away another attempt at goal for Frostburg, but the Golden Knights got their next one to go to get back within one. GU saw two shots over the next span of minutes, with Haney attempting one for the Bobcats, but neither were able to find the back of the net. Senior Nicole Gray racked up a save in goal to keep FSU in front, but Gannon was able to capitalize almost a minute later for a 5-5 game. Lamoreaux picked up the draw control to start things off, as DeMaio connected on her first goal of the game off a free position to give Frostburg back the edge. DeMaio piled up another goal, this time on a man-up opportunity, increasing FSU's advantage to 7-5. GU's next shot was blocked by the Bobcat defense, as senior Delaney Devers was credited with a CT. DeMaio picked up another caused turnover to end the quarter, as Haney and Lamoreaux sliced away one more shot each to end the half with Frostburg on top 7-5.
Devers racked up another caused turnover from Gannon to begin the third, as Badolato's next attempt at goal hit the post. Hayes fired one inside that was denied by GU, as DeMaio showed the next goal for FSU for an 8-5 lead. The Golden Knights recorded a trio of shots that were unable to be put through, as junior Jessie Bare gave the Bobcats back the ball, working for a CT. Gray stood in the way of Gannon's next look, as junior Daniella Boss got in on the defensive action, receiving a caused turnover as well. DeMaio got free once again to add to Frostburg's lead, as the Golden Knights responded right back for a 9-6 game. Bares showed another CT for the Bobcats, with Hayes slicing one home off a free position, sitting the game at 10-6 moving into the fourth quarter.
It was all FSU to start things in the fourth, with the Bobcats sending off three shots before Badolato found the next after a dish from DeMaio for a quick 11-6 score. DeMaio added to her total on the day just over a minute later, knotting another goal off a free position to double Frostburg's advantage. GU was able to strike for their first goal of the fourth, but Hayes quickly answered for FSU to put the Bobcats back up by six. Leonardi then found Boss for a 14-7 game, with both teams battling for the next minute and a half. The Golden Knights rallied when they needed it the most, scoring four unanswered goals in two minutes to cut the game to 14-11. DeMaio, doing what she's done all game, tallied another goal for FSU to end their drought, moving the game to a four-goal differential. With 3:40 left in regulation, Gannon struck again, but Badolato had her own answer, sending another one home for a 16-12 score with under three to play. DeMaio and Hayes finished off the game for Frostburg, each picking up one more goal on the day, leaving the final score at 18-12 in favor of FSU.
DeMaio finished her career day with seven goals and two assists for a total of nine points. Hayes was next with four goals, while Badolato finished with three goals and one assist. Haney and Lamoreaux each saw a pair of assists, while Gray totaled eight saves in goal.
With the win, Frostburg improves to 2-1 on the season, while Gannon starts their season 0-1. The Bobcats remain at home for their fourth straight game, welcoming in Jefferson on Sunday, March 2 at 4 PM. For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
