The Architecture of EnlightenmentThe Tibetan Monks of Drepung Loseling Monastery return to Western Maryland for an extraordinary five-day residency endorsed by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.Mandala sand painting has its roots in the tantric legacy of Buddhist India, extending back more than 20,000 years. In Tibetan, this art is called dul-tson-kyil-khor, which means “mandala of colored powders.” The lamas painstakingly lay millions of grains of colored sand to create the traditional iconography of ancient spiritual symbols. They begin by drawing an outline of the mandala on a wooden platform. Over the next five days, sands are delicately poured from traditional metal funnels called chak-purs. Upon completion, the sands are swept up and placed in an urn. To fulfill the function of healing, half of the sand is distributed to spectators while the remainder is dispersed in a nearby body of flowing water to carry the healing blessing to the ocean; from there it spreads throughout the world for planetary healing.Mandala Opening Ceremony Tuesday, April 29 | Noon The monks consecrate the mandala site with traditional chants, music and mantra recitation. Frostburg State University’s Department of Music presents "May the Fourth Be With You", a concert by the FSU Wind Ensemble, conducted by Peter B. Lewis, on Sunday, May 4, at 3:00 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center. Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, military, and FSU faculty and staff; and free for students and children. Ms. Lillia Rose, Legislative Assistant of Delegate Vogel (Maryland), will speak on political leadership. Rose earned her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from American University’s School of Public Affairs, where she focused on applied political writing, legislative research, and campaign strategy. Her experience spans local, state, and federal government, including serving as a Legislative Assistant and Staff Correspondent in the Maryland General Assembly for Delegate Joe Vogel, and interning in the Office of Congressman David Trone (MD-06). She also served as Digital Specialist for the April Delaney for Congress campaign, where she managed digital outreach and served as liaison to Garrett County. A passionate advocate for civic engagement and rural Appalachian representation, Rose is the founder of the Mountain Maryland Young Democrats and a member of the Garrett County Democratic Central Committee. In 2024, she was a Delegate to the Democratic National Convention, representing Western Maryland on the national stage. Rose also serves on the Board of the Garrett County Historical Society and previously co-coordinated the Autumn Glory Festival and Maryland State Banjo and Fiddle Tournament, while managing media and outreach for the Town of Oakland. In addition to her civilian work, Rose is a Psychological Operations Sergeant (37F) in the U.S. Army Reserve, currently assigned to the 11th Psychological Operations Battalion. She completed advanced training at the JFK School of Special Warfare and supports her unit as the Public Affairs Representative.

CARL ORFF'S MASTERWORK "CARMINA BURANA" TO BE PRESENTED AT FSUOn the weekend of May 9–11, the Frostburg State University Department of Music, in conjunction with B’er Chayim Congregation in Cumberland, the FSU Departments of Visual Arts and Theatre and Dance, as well as the Butterfly Ridge Elementary School Chorus, the Allegany County Public Schools, FSU faculty and alumni, and professional musicians from around the country, will present Carl Orff’s masterwork, "Carmina Burana", his evocative—and almost primal—setting of secular medieval poetry from the region now called Germany.Performed “in the round,” in the Cordts PE Center gymnasium, audience members and performers will be intermixed around an arena for dancing, featuring original choreography by Jamie McGreevy.
