Field Hockey Falls to No. 5 Bloomsburg After Two Third Quarter Goals
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State Field Hockey team fell to No. 5 Bloomsburg at home by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon.
It took a few minutes for both teams to acclimate to today's weather, as the cold air, strong winds, and rain resulted in a slow start to the game. Bloomsburg took the ball down to Frostburg's defensive end and earned the first penalty corner and shot of the game, resulting in sophomore Zoe Barnes' first save of the game. The Bobcat defense smacked the ball out of their zone and into the middle of the field, as FSU got the ball into their offensive half and sophomore Paige Leitzel took her first shot of the game. The ball went back-and-forth between both teams for the following few minutes, as right before the quarter ended, senior Mariana Day took a penalty corner for Frostburg, as Bloomsburg was able to regain possession, with the first quarter ending 0-0.
Quickly into the second quarter FSU earned a penalty corner with the ball being inserted by senior Emilie Bonhivert. The Huskies were able to capitalize, taking the ball to midfield. Luckily, Frostburg was able to get the ball back into their scoring arc, as over the next three minutes the Bobcats earned four shots on goal and six penalty corners. Both defenses continued to put up a fight, as both teams remained scoreless heading into the break.
Bloomsburg started the second half with the ball and within the first minute was awarded a penalty corner. The corner resulted in a shot but once again was saved by Barnes. Bloomsburg proceeded to keep the ball in their scoring arc for the next seven minutes. After a few attempts on goal, the Huskies finally put the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 lead with under eight minutes left in the third. Bloomsburg was able to keep that momentum going, stealing the ball from FSU in the middle of the field, once again taking the ball to their offensive end. A near five minutes after their first goal, the Huskies scored their second allowing them to head into the fourth quarter with a 2-0 lead.
Junior Macy Layfield attacked the goal to start the fourth, earning a shot in the first minute of the quarter. Bonhivert and junior Femke Hofkamp continued the offensive pressure for the Bobcats, both sending their tries at goal wide Frostburg tried everything they could on offense, firing three more shots and earning two more penalty corners, but were unable to get anything to go, dropping the game with a final of 2-0.
With the conclusion of the game, FSU falls to an overall record of 8-7 while Bloomsburg moves to an overall record of 13-3. The Bobcats are back in action on Tuesday, October 24 at 7 PM to as they travel to face IUP. For more information visit frostburgsports.edu.
