Football Set to Travel to Johnson C. Smith for First Round of NCAA Tournament
FROSTBURG, Md. – The Frostburg State football team earned the Mountain East Conference automatic bid to the 2025 NCAA Division II Football Playoffs, where they will travel to play Johnson C. Smith in their Super Region I matchup.
While an unofficial seed, FSU was the seventh-ranked team in the region, while JCSU earned the two seed and the right to host, having won the CIAA Championship over Virginia Union. The opening round with be held on Saturday, November 22 with a 1 PM kickoff from Charlotte, N.C.
Frostburg won a share of the MEC championship after defeating Fairmont State in its final game of its regular season, ending with the same conference record as Charleston (WV) but holding the head-to-head victory. This is the second time the Bobcats have split the MEC championship and will be its first appearance in the NCAA postseason since making the move to Division II.
FSU goes into postseason play with a record of 9-2 and are highly-ranked in several categories nationally. The Bobcat defense is ranked 22nd overall in DII in points allowed per game, as well as second in team passing efficiency defense and fourth in passing yards allowed.
The Golden Bulls enter the contest with a 10-1 overall record, avenging their only regular season loss with their championship victory over VUU. It marked their first conference championship since 1969, as they also defeated traditional powerhouse Valdosta State during their campaign. JCSU also boasts a nationally-ranked defense, as they lead the country in opponents' fourth down percentage (17.6%) while being second on third down (24.2%).
