Volleyball Rallies Early to Sweep Senators in Road Victory

The Frostburg State Volleyball team overcame early deficits to defeat Davis & Elkins 3-0 on the road Tuesday evening.

ELKINS, W. Va. – The Frostburg State Volleyball team overcame early deficits to defeat Davis & Elkins 3-0 on the road Tuesday evening.

D&E began the match by scoring the first three points, helping them to a 5-1 lead. After junior Maya Johnson got a kill to get the Bobcats within 7-4, the Senators put the next three scores down to lead 10-4 and force an FSU timeout. The break helped reset Frostburg, with freshman Adele Evans and sophomore Devin Brunk netting back-to-back kills, while sophomores Dani Kunkle and Allison Brown served up aces to tie things at 11-11. Davis & Elkins reasserted control from the service line, scoring the next four including a pair of aces, but a combination of errors and a Brunk kill brought the score back to 16-15. The Senators scored four of the next five to lead 20-16, but sophomore Emery Kuebler stopped the run on a kill and three consecutive errors again tied the set at 20-20. After trading points, it appeared D&E would pull away with the set on three straight points to lead 24-21, however three errors and back-to-back Brunk kills flipped things entirely, as FSU stole the set 26-24.

The second set began with the sides going back and forth, as Brunk, Johnson, and junior Paige Mock combined for four kills with Davis & Elkins holding a narrow 7-6 advantage. As they had done throughout the first set, the hosts gained the upper hand, scoring four points in a row to lead 11-6. Johnson helped turn things around for Frostburg with a kill, followed by two more from freshman Nevaeh Ware and Kunkle, as the former also joined with Evans on a block to tie things at 13-13. A serving error momentarily gave D&E the lead back, but this time it would be the Bobcats' turn to make a run. Evans kicked things off on a kill with an assist by freshman Bailey Rafferty, then back-to-back Senator errors were followed by a Kunkle ace and two straight Ware scores to surge ahead 20-15. Davis & Elkins tried to stay alive on a couple kills, but Mock and Johnson found the floor while Brunk put down an ace as FSU took the set 25-17.

Both sides were again evenly matched to begin the third, as D&E took advantage of a couple errors to hold a 6-4 lead. Kunkle swiftly turned things around with back-to-back kills and two aces either side of a Brunk score to pull ahead 10-6. The Senators fought back with three in a row, as a pair of kills allowed them to eventually tie things at 12-12. Ware started a three-point run on a spike, while Johnson and Mock combined on a block, but Davis & Elkins didn't let things get too out of hand, coming back for another tie at 16-16. Back-to-back D&E errors put them in a hole, as Kunkle and Kuebler heaped on the pressure with two straight kills to take a 20-16 lead. A timeout and serving error momentarily stopped the momentum, but Johnson picked things back up with a kill, while Rafferty put down an ace and Kunkle found the floor to make things 23-18. The sides then traded errors, with the Senators serving straight into the net to give FSU the win 25-19.

In a balanced attack, four Bobcats had at least five kills, led by Kunkle and Brunk each getting seven, as the pair also tied for a team-high eight digs apiece. Rafferty and Kuebler combined for 21 assists and 13 digs, while Ware and Mock put up seven blocks between the pair.

With the win, Frostburg improves to 7-12 on the year, while Davis & Elkins drops to 0-19. The Bobcats remain on the road as they travel to West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
