The FSU Communication Leadership Lab and LEAD 101 Introduction to Leadership Studies class will design and facilitate the discussion with support from event partners Allegany College of Maryland and Choose Civility: Allegany County. Refreshments and additional partner support will be provided courtesy of FSU's Office of Civic Engagement. The discussion is part of the Times Talks discussion series and Office of DEI’s #BobcatsAgainstBias week at FSU (March 31- April 5, 2025).The discussion's focus will be on educating participants about free speech rights by discussing examples, successes, and challenges and considering responsibilities, limits, and strategies. The discussion will offer an opportunity to practice free speech while raising awareness of how policies and practices support effective free speech, conflict management, and a campus culture that promotes civil discourse and civic engagement. - Apr 47:30 PMFSU Percussion Ensemble ConcertFrostburg State University’s Department of Music will present its Percussion Ensemble, directed by Dr. Mackenzie Jacob LaMont, in its spring performance on Friday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pealer Recital Hall of FSU’s Woodward D. Pealer Performing Arts Center.Percussion Ensemble students include Gavin Baker, Bryce Campbell, Jacob Deaver, Daniel Hicks, Jacob Hunt, Jacob Hutzell, Bella McConnell, Bernard Pitts and Joe Rubens III. They will be joined by guest performers Reiss Mikula, Covy Wohlmuth, Tom Harrison, Peter B. Lewis, Dr. Brent Weber and Dr. Joseph Yungen.The concert will feature six pieces that include the drum set – some in a more traditional manner and some adapted for a particular piece. The “traditional” drum set pieces include “Sinister Minister” by Bela Fleck, “Frankenstein” by Edgar Winter and “Stumpy Meets the Firecracker in Stencil Forest” by Stanley Whitaker. The less traditional uses will include “Sacrificial Rite” by David R. Gillingham, “Breakdown” by Bradley Slayter and the “Concerto for Marimba and Percussion Ensemble” by Ney Rosauro featuring Bryce Campbell on marimba.Admission is $10 for adults; $5 for seniors, members of the military and FSU faculty and staff; and free for students and children. - Apr 96:00 PMTim Wheeler Book ReadingTim Wheeler, reporter and editor of the Worker, Daily Word and the online Peoples World will be reading from his recent book "No Power Greater: The Life & Times of George A. Meyers" on Wednesday, April 9 beginning at 6 p.m. in the Lewis J. Ort Library 3rd Floor Exhibit Area. George Meyers, from Lonaconing, MD, came from a coal mining family. His experience working at the Celanese encouraged him to unionize the plant, and later become Labor Secretary for the Communist Party USA. Tim Wheeler was a close friend and comrade of Meyers for thirty years. Mr. Wheeler will be autographing copies of his books at the event.
