Kearney Sets Career CT Record, 13 Tally Goals in Men's Lacrosse's Impressive Defeat of UDC

The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team dominated on the road Wednesday afternoon, taking down the District of Columbia by a final score of 27-2.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Frostburg State Men's Lacrosse team dominated on the road Wednesday afternoon, taking down the District of Columbia by a final score of 27-2.

Frostburg got started with the scoring right off the bat, as senior Alex Walstrum won the opening face-off, setting up junior Graham Allison for the first strike of the game and a 1-0 score just 24 seconds in.  Senior Logan Covey started in goal for the Bobcats, seeing a save on his first attempt in the net.  After back and forth play for the next four minutes, FSU worked for another score, with junior John Serina feeding sophomore Luke Roach for a 2-0 game.  The Bobcats continued their pressure on the offensive side, ripping in shot after shot as senior Wesley Phillips then found the back of the net three times in the matter of three minutes, with freshman Jack Laye and sophomore JT Calhoun being credited with an assist each.  Before time finished out in the quarter, Serina sliced one home for a 6-0 Frostburg lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

Senior Gregg Dort Jr. took the face-off to begin the second, with Allison firing in the first look of the quarter but was denied by UDC's goalie.  Covey caused a turnover on the defensive end for FSU, as Calhoun was given the next goal to see the game at 7-0.  The Bobcats continued their success on the defensive end, leaving the Firebirds shotless.  Senior Landon Bruce was given back-to-back CT's as sophomore Jack Hooks scooped up the ground ball off a rebound and knotted it home to extend the score to 8-0 just before the midway mark of the second.  Phillips quickly dished to freshman Kobe Link for another goal, right before Roach sent one into the back of the net to move the game to 10-0.  Phillips continued his offensive momentum as time went on, being credited with another assist on sophomore Wyatt Dooley's goal, while then seeing another score himself off a feed from Laye, all for a 12-0 contest.  Almost two minutes later, Phillips returned the favor to Laye, assisting him on the final goal of the half to leave the score 13-0 at the break.

The Bobcats kept their foot on the gas to kick off the third, as Dort worked for the face-off dub, setting up Serina for an easy pass to senior Tyrin Long for the first goal of the quarter.  After setting the program career record for caused turnovers with 122 after seeing two in the first half, senior Seamus Kearny picked up two ground balls off a rebound shot from FSU, finding himself open for an opportunity and a score to sit the game at 15-0.  Covey and Frostburg's defense were each given a save in the quarter, all before Phillips found himself with another assist off another Calhoun goal.  Hooks and Serina continued to try and add to their total of goals on the day, as sophomore Mike Gloeckler saw the next goal for the Bobcats to put the game at 16-0.  This gave Frostburg even more energy, as the team splurged for two goals in a minute, with Serina and Dooley being awarded another score each, as senior Jay Jackson was credited with an assist.  Senior Riley Semmes entered the game in net, coughing up a turnover for UDC, as Roach and Dooley each connected on one more goal as the quarter ended, leaving FSU in front 21-0.

Serina didn't stop there, putting one away as soon as the fourth started, with Calhoun being given the assist.  Allison then provided the ball to Roach for another immediate score, as Link and freshman Payton Dean were all given a goal, with Serina and Calhoun being awarded the assists. With four immediate goals to begin the fourth, FSU increased their edge to 25-0, as a save from Semmes kept the Firebirds scoreless.  The Bobcats kept firing away shots, as Link and Dean each got another one to go by for a 27-0 game.  Semmes stood in the way of UDC's next try at goal, before the Firebirds were able to sneak one in for their first score of the game.  Graduate Nick Agresta and junior Matt Williams each received a caused turnover to round out the game, as UDC tallied one more goal on the day to leave the final at 27-2.

Roach and Phillips led the scoring action for Frostburg, each tallying four goals, while Phillips led the team in points with eight, showing four assists as well.  Link, Dooley, and Serina were all next with a hat-trick apiece, while Serina also dished out three assists.  Calhoun and Dean finished with two goals each, while six other Bobcats tallied one.  Serina caused three turnovers on the defense end, while Phillips, Kearney, and Bruce all saw a pair.  Kearney surpassed the legend of Zach Burkhardt to now hold the most caused turnovers in program history.  Walstrum saw nine ground balls going 11-for-12 in the X, while Dort was right behind with eight ground balls and a 10-for-11 showing.  Covey and Semmes both saw a pair of saves during their time in net.

With the win, Frostburg goes to 4-5 on the season, while the District of Columbia falls to 0-8.  The Bobcats are back in action Saturday, March 29 at 12 PM when they travel to Sparkill, NY to compete against St. Thomas Aquinas.  For more information and updates, please visit frostburgsports.com.
