Bobcats Celebrate Homecoming and Family Weekend at FSU Oct. 17-20It’s that time of year again when Bobcats of all generations come together to celebrate during the Frostburg State University 2024 Homecoming and Family Weekend! FSU students, families, friends, alumni, faculty and staff will be showing their Bobcat pride from Thursday, Oct. 17, to Sunday, Oct. 20.Sunday is the last day of Homecoming and Family Weekend events. The Student Government Association will hold a “Big Event” at noon to clean up the streets of Frostburg. Everyone is invited to meet on the Upper Quad to participate. Two games will take place that afternoon in Bobcat Stadium. The Women’s Soccer Game will begin at 1 p.m., with the Bobcats playing West Virginia Wesleyan College, and the Field Hockey Game at 4 p.m., when the Bobcats take on D'Youville University.Saxophonist Dr. Brent Weber will perform in a Faculty Artist Series concert on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Pealer Recital Hall. Completed in solo and piano form in 1911, the piece is most well-known through its 1919 orchestration of the accompaniment by Jean Roger-Ducasse.“Sonata in C-sharp Minor for Alto Saxophone” (1943) is Decruck’s most well-known work. Decruck combines the classical sonata form with impressionistic harmony and, at times, polytonality. Decruck dedicated this work to Marcel Mule, the world-renowned French saxophonist.Kol Nidrei, Op. 47 (also known as “All Vows,” the meaning of the phrase in Aramaic) is a composition for cello and orchestra Bruch completed in 1880. The use of Jewish folk music as an inspiration has been seen by some academics as a reflection of the extent of Jewish assimilation into Germany.“Fantasia Concertante,” another piece for Rousseau, was composed in 1987. Heiden’s music has been described as neoclassical in its formal structure, strongly polyphonic in texture and distinguished by its impeccable formal balance and effective instrumentation.Experienced in multiple genres of music from classical to jazz, rock ’n’ roll and beyond, Weber advocates versatility. His work with the contemporary jazz group Jake Mowrer Quartet featured him performing and recording throughout Northern Georgia. As a concert saxophonist, Weber is active with the North American Saxophone Alliance. In 2007, he presented the European premiere of Todd Barton’s “Diastems II” at the World Saxophone Congress XIV in Ljubljana, Slovenia. As winner of the UGA Concerto Competition in 2009, he performed Ingolf Dahl’s “Concerto for Saxophone and Wind Ensemble.” In 2012, he was part of the 2012 Naxos release, “Street Song.” Formerly an assistant professor at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music in Chengdu, China, Weber is department chair and assistant professor of saxophone in FSU’s Department of Music where, in addition to maintaining the saxophone and bassoon studios, he also coordinates the Jazz Studies program.For more information, contact FSU’s Department of Music at 301-687-4109.
